Koivusaari
Islands in the mouth of Ounasjoki river are composed of low sand islands and sand banks which are flooded in springtime. The flood islands form a significant traditional landscape. They are also valuable flora and fauna areas. The islands have been used as meadows until the beginning of 1060's. 135 bird species have been found in the area, 90-100 of them have nested there or been found in nesting time.
An easy-to-walk nature trail has been built on Koivusaari island in the summer 2003. There are signposts along the trail informing about the history, vegetation and animals of Koivusaari. There is also a floating bird-watch tower. The easiest way to reach the trail is from the Ounas Pavillion. Map
